What is an eland?

The eland is a large spiral-horned antelope of genus Taurotragus. The common eland (Taurotragus oryx) is Africa's second-largest antelope after the giant eland. In Uganda, the East African subspecies T. o. pattersonianus occurs in Lake Mburo and Kidepo Valley national parks.

Is the eland the largest antelope in the world?

The giant eland (Taurotragus derbianus) is the largest antelope species. The common eland is second-largest — but it is the largest antelope on standard Uganda safari routes, where giant eland do not occur. See our eland facts page for size details.

What is the scientific name of the eland in Uganda?

Species: Taurotragus oryx (common eland). Uganda's East African form is Taurotragus oryx pattersonianus, also called Patterson's eland. The name "Cape eland" usually refers to the southern subspecies T. o. oryx of South Africa.

Where can I see eland in Uganda?

The best places are Lake Mburo National Park (most accessible and reliable), Kidepo Valley National Park (remote Narus Valley herds), and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve on Karamoja circuits. Compare parks on our where to see eland page.

Can I see eland in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls?

No — eland are not resident in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls national parks. For eland, route through Lake Mburo or Kidepo instead.

How big is an eland?

Males stand up to 1.6 metres at the shoulder and average 500–600 kg, with exceptional bulls exceeding 900 kg. Females are roughly 20 cm shorter and weigh 340–445 kg. Both sexes carry spiral horns.

Do female eland have horns?

Yes — unlike most large antelopes, both male and female eland grow horns. Bull horns are thicker and longer (up to ~1.2 m); cow horns are shorter but still prominently spiralled.

How fast can an eland run?

Eland are often called the slowest antelope — sprint speed is only about 40 km/h and they tire quickly at that pace. They compensate with a steady trot of roughly 22 km/h over long distances and can jump 2.5 metres vertically from a standstill.

What do eland eat?

Eland are mixed feeders — they graze short grass when available and browse leaves, shoots, and herbs when grass quality drops. This flexibility helps them survive dry spells in Kidepo and acacia country in Lake Mburo. More on our eland diet page.

Are eland dangerous to humans?

Eland are generally calm and non-aggressive, fleeing rather than charging when disturbed. On game drives, keep respectful distance — especially around calves — and never approach on foot except on official guided walking safaris with armed rangers in Lake Mburo.

What predators hunt eland?

Healthy adult eland are rarely taken — only lion prides in Kidepo routinely tackle large prey. Leopard and spotted hyena take calves and weaker animals, especially in Lake Mburo.

Are eland endangered?

The common eland is classified Least Concern by the IUCN, but the global population is decreasing. Uganda's populations depend on protected reserves. Read our conservation page for threats and park strongholds.

When is the best time to see eland in Uganda?

Eland can be seen year-round. Dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer shorter grass, better visibility, and concentrations near water. See best time to see eland for monthly detail.

Why is Lake Mburo the best park for eland?

Lake Mburo is close to Kampala, compact, and holds reliable eland habitat — acacia woodland and open valleys where herds appear on most thorough game drives. Walking safaris add a unique ground-level perspective.

Can I combine eland viewing with gorilla trekking?

Yes — a classic combination pairs Bwindi gorilla trekking with a 1–2 night Lake Mburo stop for eland, zebra, and impala. Most 7–10 day Uganda circuits can include this savannah opener or closer.

Do eland live in herds?

Yes. Eland form loose herds from a dozen to several hundred animals, mixing ages and sexes outside breeding peaks. They are not territorial — herds shift with grass, water, and season.

What is the dewlap on an eland?

The dewlap is a loose fold of skin hanging from the throat and neck — more prominent in bulls. It may help with heat dissipation and is part of the eland's distinctive cattle-like silhouette.

How do eland differ from greater kudu?

Eland are heavier and more bovine in build, with tighter horn spirals; both sexes have horns. Greater kudu are more woodland-adapted, taller in appearance, with longer open spirals on males only. Kudu are shyer; eland are more visible on open Mburo valleys.

Which Uganda safaris include eland viewing?

Any itinerary visiting Lake Mburo or Kidepo can include eland. Browse eland safaris and Uganda safari packages for routed options.

How can tourists help eland conservation?

Book through licensed operators, pay official park fees, include Lake Mburo or Kidepo to diversify tourism revenue beyond gorilla parks, follow track rules, and report snares to rangers on walking safaris. Tourism funds the habitat eland depend on.
