The spotted hyena diet is built around cooperative hunting, rank-based feeding, and the ability to consume virtually every part of a carcass — including bone. For decades, popular narratives portrayed hyenas as dependent scavengers living off lion leftovers. Decades of field research tell a different story: spotted hyenas are among Africa's most successful hunters, and in many ecosystems they kill more prey than the lions they compete with.
Hunter First, Scavenger Second
Long-term studies in the Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater demonstrate that spotted hyena clans kill between 60% and 95% of the animals they eat. The remainder comes from scavenging — carcasses of animals that died naturally, kills appropriated from other predators, or opportunistic feeding at lion kills.
This hunting success stems from cooperative strategy. Clan members fan out across grassland, using endurance and numbers to wear down prey. A single hyena can sustain speeds of 60 kilometres per hour over several kilometres — enough to run down young, old, or injured ungulates. Groups can tackle adult wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo calves that would overwhelm a solitary predator.
Prey Species in Uganda
In Uganda's savannah parks, spotted hyena prey includes:
- Uganda kob — abundant on the Kasenyi Plains of Queen Elizabeth; a staple prey item
- Waterbuck and Defassa waterbuck — common in Murchison and Queen Elizabeth wetlands
- Warthog — frequently taken across all major parks
- Topi and oribi — seasonally important in Queen Elizabeth grassland
- Buffalo calves — targeted by larger clans in Murchison and Kidepo
- Zebra — available in Lake Mburo and occasionally elsewhere
- Bushbuck and duiker — supplementary prey in woodland habitat
Hyenas also consume carrion, eggs, and occasionally fruit, but mammalian prey forms the overwhelming majority of their diet.
Cooperative Hunting Tactics
Spotted hyena hunts are not coordinated ambushes in the way lion pride attacks can be. Instead, clan members use persistence hunting — pursuing prey over distance, exploiting stamina advantages, and using numbers to isolate vulnerable individuals from herds. Communication during hunts includes whoops that may recruit additional clan members and close-range vocalisations that coordinate positioning.
Hunting success rates vary with prey type, clan size, and habitat openness. On the Kasenyi Plains, where grass is short and kob herds are dense, hyena hunting is particularly efficient — especially at dawn and dusk when prey visibility is high and temperatures are cool.
Feeding Hierarchy at Kills
When a kill is made, access to meat is governed by strict clan rank. The highest-ranking female and her offspring feed first. Subordinate females and their cubs wait. Adult immigrant males — who join clans from outside and hold the lowest rank — typically feed last, regardless of who participated in the hunt.
This hierarchy triggers the vocalisations most visitors recognise. The famous giggle — often described as a laugh — erupts when subordinate animals compete for position at a kill and are challenged by dominants. The sound encodes stress, submission, and social rank, allowing eavesdropping clan members to assess the feeding situation from a distance.
Bone Consumption and Nutrient Recycling
Spotted hyenas can digest bone, hooves, and hide that other carnivores leave behind. Their powerful jaws splinter long bones, and their stomach acids dissolve calcium and phosphorus that re-enter the ecosystem through digestion and waste. White, chalky hyena droppings — rich in calcium — mark clan territories and are a familiar sight on game drives across Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth.
This bone-crushing ability gives hyenas a competitive advantage at carcasses. Even when lions make a kill, hyenas can return to consume the skeletal remains long after lions have departed — a behaviour that fuelled the scavenger myth but actually reflects extraordinary digestive specialisation.
Competition with Lions and Other Predators
Spotted hyenas compete directly with lions for food. In Queen Elizabeth and Murchison, the two species share prey bases and frequently interact at kills. Lions usually dominate hyenas at fresh carcasses when pride numbers are high. Hyenas, however, often prevail through persistence — recruiting clan members via whoops, harassing lions over hours, and returning to consume remains.
Research in some ecosystems shows hyenas lose a majority of their kills to lions. In others, hyenas are net beneficiaries. The balance depends on clan size, pride composition, and habitat openness. In Uganda, both species coexist in healthy numbers, and safari visitors often witness these interactions on dawn drives across the Kasenyi Plains.
Water and Supplementary Feeding
Spotted hyenas drink regularly when water is available and can survive on blood and moisture from prey during dry periods. They do not need to drink daily but will visit waterholes, riverbanks, and crater lakes within their territories — behaviour that can improve sighting odds during midday game drives near water in Queen Elizabeth.
Diet and Cub Development
Cubs begin eating meat at the den within weeks of birth, though they continue nursing for up to 18 months. High-ranking mothers provide better access to kills, wean cubs earlier, and produce more surviving offspring — a direct link between social rank and nutritional investment. Cub mortality is significant, particularly in the first year, when predation by lions, leopard attacks, and sibling aggression all take a toll.
Human-Related Diet Conflicts
Outside protected areas, spotted hyenas occasionally prey on livestock — goats, sheep, and young cattle. This drives retaliatory killing and poisoning, which poses a greater threat to hyena populations than natural predation pressure. Inside Uganda's national parks, livestock predation is minimal, and hyena diets remain wild. Conservation efforts to reduce conflict beyond park boundaries are essential for long-term population stability.
