Black-and-white colobus monkey — Uganda safari guide for travelers planning wildlife encounters.
The black-and-white colobus is among the most striking primates in East Africa — a large arboreal monkey whose flowing white mantle, tufted tail, and calm canopy poise make it unforgettable on any forest walk. In Uganda, this is the mantled guereza (Colobus guereza), widespread in rainforest patches from Kibale National Park and Budongo Forest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and lodge trails at forest edges. Unlike chimpanzees or gorillas, colobus are often encountered without separate trekking permits — a welcome bonus on primate safaris.
Visitors remember two things above all: the dramatic black-and-white patterning that photographs beautifully against green canopy, and the spectacular leaps colobus perform when crossing forest gaps — long white tails streaming, arms outstretched, bodies arcing between branches metres apart.
What Is a Black-and-White Colobus?
"Black-and-white colobus" is a common name applied to several species in the genus Colobus. In Uganda's forests, the animal you see is the mantled guereza — Colobus guereza — not the coastal Angola colobus subspecies Colobus angolensis palliatus, which dominates lowland and coastal forests farther east in Tanzania and Kenya. Uganda's western populations are generally assigned to C. g. occidentalis (western guereza).
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Chordata
- Class: Mammalia
- Order: Primates
- Family: Cercopithecidae
- Subfamily: Colobinae
- Genus: Colobus
- Species: Colobus guereza
Colobus monkeys are Old World primates specialised for leaf-eating. They lack thumbs — hook-like hands grip branches for brachiation — and carry a multi-chambered stomach that ferments tough foliage.
Physical Characteristics
The White Mantle
The defining feature is the mantle — long white fur flowing along the flanks and shoulders over a black body. A bushy white tail often exceeds body length. The contrast is among the boldest in African primates.
Size and Build
Adults weigh roughly 9 to 14 kilograms. Head-and-body length runs about 50 to 70 centimetres, plus a tail of 70 to 90 centimetres. The build is slender and long-limbed — adapted for suspension and spectacular leaps.
Where Black-and-White Colobus Live in Uganda
Black-and-white colobus are widespread in forest patches across Uganda's western and southwestern circuits:
- Kibale National Park — colobus on chimp trek trails and forest walks
- Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — close canopy views on community boardwalks
- Budongo Forest Reserve — mahogany and fig canopy on Murchison circuits
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — montane forest during gorilla trek approaches
- Entebbe Botanical Gardens — accessible introduction near the airport
Forest lodges at Kibale, Budongo, and Bwindi routinely report colobus from verandas and trail networks. Explore our where to see black-and-white colobus guide.
Habitat and Ecosystem
Colobus need tall, continuous canopy — mature tropical and montane rainforest, riverine gallery forest, and wooded swamp margins. Read our habitat guide for vegetation and seasonal ecology.
Social Structure
Black-and-white colobus live in multi-male, multi-female troops typically numbering 5 to 15 animals. Home ranges overlap in the canopy; troops defend space through roaring and ritualised displays.
Diet — Leaf-Eating Specialists
Colobus are folivores — leaf-eaters with a fermenting forestomach. Details on our diet page.
Behaviour and Spectacular Leaps
When forest structure opens into a gap, colobus launch into spectacular leaps, sailing between trees with arms and tail extended. Males produce deep roaring calls at dawn. See our behaviour guide.
Conservation Status
The IUCN classifies Colobus guereza as Least Concern globally. More on our conservation page.
Best Time to See Black-and-White Colobus
Colobus are visible year-round. Dry seasons — roughly June to September and December to February — offer easier forest trails. See best time to see black-and-white colobus.
Safari Experiences
Colobus viewing folds into Uganda's primate circuits — chimpanzee trekking at Kibale, gorilla trekking at Bwindi, and Budongo add-ons on Murchison Falls routes. Browse black-and-white colobus safari experiences and Uganda safari packages.
