Overview of Lake Baringo
Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake in Baringo County, Kenya's northern Rift Valley, fed by the Molo, Perkerra, and Ol Arabel rivers. Designated a Ramsar wetland in 2005, the lake supports more than 470 bird species alongside hippos, crocodiles, and community conservation projects including Rothschild's giraffe reintroduction at Ruko on the eastern shore.
Unlike alkaline neighbours such as Lake Bogoria, Baringo's freshwater ecology sustains fish eagles, skimmers, hornbills, and endemic tilapia — habitat contrast that makes two-lake Rift circuits especially rewarding. The Njemps (Il Chamus) people maintain distinctive fishing and pastoral traditions centred on dugout canoes and lakeside livelihoods.
