No-obligation proposal with named lodges, included permits and a complete safari price.

Tour overview

4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Mount Karisimbi Hike Four days combining gorilla trekking with a Mount Karisimbi overnight hike — at 4,507 m the highest of the Virunga volcanoes on the Rwanda–DRC border. Karisimbi is a serious two-day ascent requiring good fitness and cold-weather gear; gorilla day provides the primate highlight before the altitude challenge. Karisimbi's summit camp sits above the cloud line with views across the entire Virunga chain — Mikeno, Bisoke, Nyiragongo (DRC), and Sabyinyo. RDB trekking permits required for both activities.

Gorilla trekking — rest before altitude challenge

07:00 briefing at Kinigi Park Headquarters. Full gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park with RDB rangers — trackers may have located your assigned family overnight in bamboo or hagenia forest at 2,500–3,500 m.

Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking

Rwanda's premier primate encounter before the altitude test — one hour with mountain gorillas, then certificate presentation at Kinigi.
Spend one hour with the habituated family — silverback displays, juveniles in bamboo, mothers nursing infants. Return for certificate. Afternoon strict rest at the lodge: light meal, rehydrate, repack for Karisimbi. No alcohol — early bed essential before 6–8 hours climbing tomorrow. Trek duration: 2–8 hours round trip Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner Accommodation: Same Kinigi lodge

Karisimbi ascent — overnight high camp

Trailhead departure after early breakfast. Full-day climb through montane forest, bamboo, and Afro-alpine lobelia zones to high-altitude camp (approx. 6–8 hours climbing). RDB ranger escort and porter team carry tents, cooking equipment, food, and water.

Safari activity | Mount Karisimbi overnight hike

Two-day ascent of Rwanda's highest volcano (4,507 m) — muddy trails, cold summit night, and views across Mikeno, Bisoke, Nyiragongo (DRC), and Sabyinyo from camp above the cloud line.
Camp near 3,700 m in basic tents. Temperatures drop below freezing at night — four-season sleeping bag essential. On clear evenings, the glow of Nyiragongo's lava lake may be visible across the border in DRC. Pre-dawn summit push tomorrow. Trek duration: 6–8 hours ascent Meals: Packed lunch and camp dinner Accommodation: Karisimbi high camp (basic tents)

Karisimbi summit & return to Kigali

Pre-dawn push to Mount Karisimbi summit at 4,507 m (approx. 3–4 hours). On clear mornings, the entire Virunga chain unfolds — Mikeno, Bisoke, Nyiragongo, and Sabyinyo from Rwanda's highest point on the DRC border.

Safari activity | Mount Karisimbi summit push

Pre-dawn ascent to 4,507 m on Rwanda's highest volcano — Afro-alpine lobelia fields, volcanic scree, and panoramic Virunga views across the DRC border on clear mornings.
Descend to trailhead (approx. 4–5 hours), meet your vehicle, then drive to Kigali (approx. 2.5 hours from Musanze). Long, physically demanding day — 8–10 hours total climbing plus transfer. Altitude sickness medication and travel insurance with mountaineering cover strongly recommended. Arrive Kigali by evening for hotel or KGL airport. Celebrate completing Rwanda's highest peak (4,507 m) and a mountain gorilla encounter in four days — one of the most demanding short itineraries in the Virunga Massif. Trek duration: 7–9 hours summit day (ascent + descent) Drive time: Approx. 2.5 hours to Kigali after descent Meals: Breakfast on mountain, lunch en route
